How to Make Mulled Wine with Dried Orange Slices

Glass of mulled wine with a dried orange slice, star anise and cranberries

Mulled wine is the easiest Christmas drink there is, and dried orange slices make it even easier. No peeling, no zesting, no half-used oranges going soft in the fruit bowl. Just drop them in the pan and they do the work.

Our orange slices are air-dried with nothing added and keep for 12 months in the cupboard, so you can buy once and have them ready for every party from now until New Year.

Mulled wine for a crowd (about 15 glasses)

You'll need

  • 1 Nim's Orange Mulled Wine Party Pack (15 orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves and red currants or cranberries)
  • 3 bottles of red wine – nothing fancy, a fruity Merlot or Rioja is perfect
  • 100–150g caster or brown sugar, or honey, to taste
  • 100ml brandy or orange liqueur (optional)

Method

  1. Pour the wine into a large pan and add the cinnamon, cloves, berries and about half the orange slices.
  2. Stir in the sugar and warm on a low heat for 20–30 minutes. Don't let it boil – it burns off the alcohol and makes the spices bitter.
  3. Taste, and add more sugar if you like it sweeter. Stir in the brandy just before serving.
  4. Ladle into glasses and float a fresh orange slice from the pack on top of each one.

Just making one bottle?

Use 4 orange slices, 1 cinnamon stick and a few cloves per bottle, plus 2 tablespoons of sugar. Keep the rest of the slices for garnishing each glass. Our 50-slice orange pot comes with a free jar of Christmas Spice Dust – sprinkle a little on the slice in each glass for a proper festive finish.

Alcohol-free version

Swap the wine for equal parts red grape juice and cranberry juice, leave out the sugar and brandy, and mull exactly the same way. Kids and drivers get the same Christmas smell and the same pretty glass.

Leftover slices? Hang them on the tree

Christmas tree decorated with dried orange slices

Dried orange slices make lovely tree decorations, wreaths and gift toppers. Thread a ribbon or a bit of twine through the slice, tie it on, and they'll last right through the season. Nothing goes to waste – which is exactly how we like it.

Making a wreath? Our bigger bags of orange slices for wreaths and decorating come in 30 and 50 slices.
