Mug of hot spiced apple with a dried apple slice and cinnamon

If mulled wine isn't your thing, hot spiced apple is the one to make. It's softer and fruitier, and it works just as well with cider as it does with plain apple juice, so there's a version for everyone round the table.

Our apple slices are air-dried with nothing added and keep for 12 months in the cupboard, so they're ready whenever you need them.

Hot spiced cider for a crowd (about 15 glasses)

You'll need

  • 1 Nim's Apple Mulled Wine Kit – Party Size (15 apple slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves and red currants or cranberries)
  • 2 litres of medium or dry cider
  • 2–3 tablespoons of brown sugar or honey, to taste
  • 50ml brandy or calvados (optional)

Method

  1. Pour the cider into a large pan and add the cinnamon, cloves, berries and about half the apple slices.
  2. Stir in the sugar and warm gently for 15–20 minutes. Keep it below a simmer.
  3. Taste, add more sugar if you like, and stir in the brandy just before serving.
  4. Ladle into mugs and add an apple slice from the pack to each one.

Alcohol-free version

Swap the cider for cloudy apple juice and leave out the sugar – the juice is sweet enough. Kids love it, and it makes the house smell like Christmas.

Spice it up

Our 50-slice apple pot comes with a free jar of Christmas Spice Dust. Sprinkle a little over the slice in each mug, or over porridge and hot chocolate.
